Bubble App for Flexible Childcare
Since I returned to work when Leo was 7 months old there have been a few times when I needed ad-hoc childcare - when family can’t help. I turned to the Bubble Babysitting app and it’s been great in allowing me to get focus time without having to commit to a rigid nursery structure.
My return to work arrangements
Leo first started with a local childminder when I returned to work when he was 7 months old for 2 days a week. This worked fine for the first couple of months, but as I started to take on more responsibilities at work and found I needed to increase my hours, sometimes I could manage if Leo slept well during the day, but other times I would simply book a babysitter via Bubble for 2-3 hours which gave me quality focus time. I would set myself up in my office room or kitchen and the babysitter would entertain Leo next door
For me, this was the best solution which meant I didn’t have to commit to the expense of another full or half day of childcare, and super convenient as they came to me. Even though the childminder only lived a short distance away, there were a couple of schools in between which meant the journey could sometimes take a while.
The first time I booked a babysitter, I was a bit nervous- although you can see your friends recommended sitters, actually none of my friends had used the app yet so I booked someone based on their profile and positive reviews from other mums. When she turned up, I instantly felt at ease. We spent some time together with Leo before I then went off to get some work done.
I think Leo thought it was great- having someone there just to entertain him so he thought!
Since then I have booked 7 different baby sitters and all have been great, and I have 3 that I regularly book.
The Mumming Pop-up Creche
I started running co-working sessions last December 2018 without a pop-up creche, at a co-working space in Teddington which was great. However, I had a lot of messages from mums asking whether I’d be adding some element of childcare. It wasn’t possible at this venue, so I decided to relocate to Twickenham to The Royal Oak. I ran the first 2 sessions with a pop-up creche on Mondays in February, with the intention of making it a regular session.
Since I already used Bubble myself, it was natural for me to chose this option to help me run the pop-up creche. It’s really easy to book the nannies - I ensure that we’ve got plenty of cover for the number of children expected and email the mums to let them know which nanny is their key point of contact.
Currently we meet up every other week on a Monday- check out the next upcoming session in the Meetups and Events section.
More to come
I have a growing collection of toys and soft flooring I bring for each pop-up creche session, but have some bigger plans for the future to save me lugging around a car full of toys so watch this space!
